One Tech Engineering is looking for a Substation Technician for a position located near Appleton, Wisconsin. The Substation Technician will service and test transformers, relays, breakers, switches, and other electrical apparatus/systems at utility substations and industrial facilities.

The candidate must be a US Citizen or a green card holder, the position is not eligible for sponsorship. The candidate should have an Associate’s degree in Electrical Power or Electrical Engineering, or 5+ years of hands-on field experience.

Local candidates preferred. This is not a remote position.

Substation Technician Responsibilities:
  • Ground grid testing, medium voltage cable testing.
  • Troubleshoot and test control circuits, communications systems, protections systems and other electrical apparatus.
  • Perform breaker and relay retrofits.
  • Ability to read prints and control/protection schemes.
  • Complete and submit reports accurately and timely.
  • All other duties as assigned by management.
  • Applying test procedures for various types of relay test equipment.
  • Substation awareness and Safety consciousness.
  • Aptitude to quickly learn and apply test procedures for various types of substation equipment.
  • Performs testing on low and medium voltage breakers including Megger, Ductor, Hi-Pot, Hi-Current, and Timing tests. 
  • Testing on power transformers including Power Factor, TTR, Insulation Resistance, Winding Resistance.
  • Completes mechanical work and repairs on breakers including wiring, painting, parts replacement.
  • Utilizes and accurately reads meters. 
  • Reading and plotting curves.
Requirements for the Substation Technician:
  • Associate’s degree in Electrical Power or Electrical Engineering, or 5+ years of hands-on field experience.
  • Experience as a Switchgear/High Voltage Technician.
  • Proficiency with high voltage test equipment as well as knowledge of low and medium voltage test equipment.
  • Proficient computer and phone skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on client/customer needs.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Extensive travel; up to 5 days/week with overnights possible.
  • On call duty is required approximately six times per year.
  • This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, climbing, crawling, and reaching frequently.
  • Aerial work may sometimes be necessary, such as working on ladders or scaffolding.
