As more companies embrace a hybrid work model, employees across many sectors are adapting to remote workday. One of the greatest challenges of adjusting to this hybrid model is finding a healthy work-life balance.
In this post from the One Tech Engineering recruiting team, we’re breaking down some tips to help you find a better balance while working remotely. Here’s what you need to know.
Life Without a Commute
After the pandemic year pushed the world to adopt a temporary remote work model, the benefits of remote employment became clear immediately. For employees, all of the time that would have been spent on the daily commute adds up to about an hour. While this might seem like a tremendous gain in terms of quality of life, many workers began to miss their morning routine and commute to work.
For millions of Americans, the time traveling to and from work gave them a buffer between work and home life that would be missed when working remotely. Many remote-working professionals began to realize that without their commute, it was difficult to mentally separate work from their personal lives. This can be especially challenging for professionals who have a hard time mentally clocking out at the end of the day, especially for individuals with flexible schedules.
Separating Work From Home
It takes careful planning to separate your personal and professional life when you’re working from home and you need help setting boundaries.
Here are some tips to help remote workers stay on track:
● Establish new rituals to replace your old ones.
● Try reading the news or taking a short walk to get yourself primed for work mode.
● Be strict with yourself about planning and following workday start and stop times.
● Set the alarm on your phone if necessary to remind yourself when it’s time to work and when it’s time to be finished for the day.
● Never check work emails or communications outside of your scheduled work hours.
● Work in a space that’s free of personal distractions if possible.
Maintaining Work Relationships
Another challenge when working at home is how to maintain relationships with colleagues when you never or rarely see each other in the workplace. What you don’t want to do is lose your connections and collaborative spirit. Make an extra effort to meet with coworkers virtually or outside of your normal workday from time to time, even if those meetings are short. This offers a terrific opportunity to connect with everyone and stay in the loop.
