Hiring a temporary employee can always feel like a risk. Not only do you need to invest some time into training, but you also need to make sure that the temporary employee will be as conscientious and driven as your full-time employees. So what do you look for to make sure that you're getting the most out of the employee-employer relationship?

1. Skills: What Specific Skills Does the Employee Have?

When employees are only coming on-board for a temporary amount of time, it becomes more important to ensure that they have relevant skills. And this means being highly specific about skills. A data entry position doesn't just need someone experienced in data entry; it needs someone experienced in the database or software solution that you're using. This will reduce the amount of time you need to invest in training.

2. Attitude: Is the Candidate Easy to Work With?

Your full-time staff members have had enough time to get used to each other's quirks and foibles. Your temporary employee is going to have a lot thrown at them very fast, and will need to get used to an entirely new cast of characters. Ask your candidate when they last had an issue with another employee. What was that issue, and how did they resolve it? This will tell you a lot about how your employee resolves conflict.

3. Goals: What Does Your Candidate Want?

Is your candidate temping to get a full-time position? Or are they trying to learn as much as they can about their industry? What makes them tick? Candidates who have an actual interest in your business are very likely to perform better than those who are simply looking for any position. Look for a candidate who shows true passion within the industry.

4. Motivation: Can You Take the Ball and Run With It?

When was the last time your candidate was asked to take the lead on a project? How did it work out and what did they do to ensure their own success? Did anything go wrong in the project, and if so, how did they deal with it? When interviewing a candidate, it's important to find out how self-motivated they are and whether they are able to take a task from the beginning to completion. Temporary employees have to be fast-witted and quick to learn.

You may be surprised to discover that temporary employees are often more motivated than full-time employees. Not only do they want to prove themselves, but they're also often looking at problems with "fresh eyes". OneTech can help you find motivated, driven employees who will add value to your business for as long as you need them and make working with temporary employees and enjoyable experience.  Let us take on this project for you!
